Chapter 144

1 Blessed be the LORD, my R4479 rock, Who trains R4480 my hands for war, And my fingers for battle; 2 My lovingkindness and my R4481 fortress, My stronghold R4482 and my deliverer, My shield R4483 and He in whom I take refuge, Who subdues R4484 my F1511 people under me. 3 O LORD, what R4485 is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You think of him? 4 Man R4486 is like a mere breath; His days R4487 are like a passing shadow. 5 Bow R4488 Your heavens, O LORD, and come R4489 down; Touch R4490 the mountains, that they may smoke. 6 Flash forth lightning R4491 and scatter them; Send out Your arrows R4492 and confuse them. 7 Stretch forth Your hand from R4493 on high; Rescue me and deliver R4494 me out of great waters, Out of the hand of aliens R4495 8 Whose mouths speak R4496 deceit, And whose right R4497 hand is a right hand of falsehood.

9 I will sing a new R4498 song to You, O God; Upon a harp R4499 of ten strings I will sing praises to You, 10 Who gives R4500 salvation to kings, Who rescues R4501 David His servant from the evil sword. 11 Rescue me and deliver me out of the hand of aliens, R4502 Whose mouth speaks R4503 deceit And whose right R4504 hand is a right hand of falsehood. 12 Let our sons in their youth be as grown-up R4505 plants, And our daughters as corner R4506 pillars fashioned F1512 as for a palace; 13 Let our garners R4507 be full, furnishing every kind of produce, And our flocks bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields; F1513 14 Let our cattle R4508 bear F1514 Without mishap R4509 F1515 and without loss, R4510 F1516 Let there be no outcry R4511 in our streets! 15 How blessed are the people who are so situated; How blessed R4512 are the people whose God is the LORD!

Chapter 145

1 I will extol R4513 You, my R4514 God, O King, And I will bless R4515 Your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, And I will praise R4516 Your name forever and ever. 3 Great R4517 is the LORD, and highly to be praised, And His greatness R4518 is unsearchable. 4 One generation R4519 shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. 5 On the glorious R4520 splendor F1517 of Your majesty And on R4521 Your wonderful works, I will meditate. 6 Men shall speak of the power F1518 of Your awesome R4522 acts, And I will tell R4523 of Your greatness. 7 They shall eagerly F1519 utter the memory of Your abundant R4524 goodness And will shout R4525 joyfully of Your righteousness. 8 The LORD is gracious R4526 and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. 9 The LORD is good R4527 to all, And His mercies R4528 are over all His works.

10 All R4529 Your works shall give thanks to You, O LORD, And Your godly R4530 ones shall bless You. 11 They shall speak of the glory R4531 of Your kingdom And talk of Your power; 12 To make R4532 known to the sons of men Your F1520 mighty acts And the glory R4533 of the majesty of Your F1520 kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an F1521 everlasting R4534 kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations. 14 The LORD sustains R4535 all who fall And raises R4536 up all who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all look F1522 to You, And You give R4537 them their food in due time. 16 You open R4538 Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The LORD is righteous R4539 in all His ways And kind in all His deeds. 18 The LORD is near R4540 to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in R4541 truth. 19 He will fulfill R4542 the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear R4543 their cry and will save them. 20 The LORD keeps R4544 all who love Him, But all the wicked R4545 He will destroy. 21 My mouth R4546 will speak the praise of the LORD, And all R4547 flesh will bless R4548 His holy name forever and ever.

Chapter 146

1 Praise F1523 the F1524 LORD! Praise R4549 the LORD, O my soul! 2 I will praise the LORD while R4550 I live; I will sing R4551 praises to my God while I have my being. 3 Do R4552 not trust in princes, In mortal F1525 man, R4553 in whom there is no R4554 salvation. 4 His spirit R4555 departs, he returns R4556 to the F1526 earth; In that very day his thoughts R4557 perish.

5 How blessed R4558 is he whose help is the God of Jacob, Whose hope R4559 is in the LORD his God, 6 Who made R4560 heaven and earth, The sea R4561 and all that is in them; Who keeps R4562 faith F1527 forever; 7 Who executes R4563 justice for the oppressed; Who gives R4564 food to the hungry. The LORD sets R4565 the prisoners free. 8 The LORD opens R4566 the eyes of the blind; The LORD raises R4567 up those who are bowed down; The LORD loves R4568 the righteous; 9 The LORD protects R4569 F1528 the strangers; F1529 He supports R4570 F1530 the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts F1531 the R4571 way of the wicked. 10 The LORD will reign R4572 forever, Your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise F1532 the F1533 LORD!

Chapter 147

1 Praise F1534 the F1535 LORD! For it R4573 is good to sing praises to our God; For it F1536 is pleasant and praise is becoming. R4574 2 The LORD builds R4575 up Jerusalem; He gathers R4576 the outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted R4577 And binds R4578 up their wounds. F1537 4 He counts R4579 the number of the stars; He gives R4580 F1538 names to all of them. 5 Great R4581 is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding R4582 is infinite. F1539 6 The LORD supports R4583 F1540 the afflicted; He brings down the wicked to the ground. 7 Sing R4584 to the LORD with thanksgiving; Sing praises to our God on the lyre, 8 Who covers R4585 the heavens with clouds, Who provides R4586 rain for the earth, Who makes R4587 grass to grow F1541 on the mountains. 9 He gives R4588 to the beast its food, And to the young R4589 ravens which cry. 10 He does not delight in the strength of the horse; R4590 He does R4591 not take pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 The LORD favors R4592 those who fear Him, Those R4593 who wait for His lovingkindness.

12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! 13 For He has strengthened the bars R4594 of your gates; He has blessed R4595 your sons within you. 14 He makes R4596 peace F1542 in your borders; He satisfies R4597 you with the R4598 finest F1543 of the wheat. 15 He sends forth His command R4599 to the earth; His word R4600 runs very swiftly. 16 He gives snow R4601 like wool; He scatters the frost R4602 like ashes. 17 He casts forth His ice R4603 as fragments; Who can stand before His cold? R4604 18 He sends R4605 forth His word and melts them; He causes R4606 His wind to blow and the waters to flow. 19 He declares R4607 His words to Jacob, His statutes R4608 and His ordinances to Israel. 20 He has R4609 not dealt thus with any nation; And as for His ordinances, they have not R4610 known them. Praise F1544 the F1545 LORD!

Chapter 148

1 Praise F1546 the F1547 LORD! Praise the LORD from R4611 the heavens; Praise Him in R4612 the heights! 2 Praise Him, all R4613 His angels; Praise Him, all R4614 His hosts! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light! 4 Praise Him, highest R4615 F1548 heavens, And the waters R4616 that are above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He R4617 commanded and they were created. 6 He has also established R4618 them forever and ever; He has made a decree R4619 which will not pass away.

7 Praise the LORD from the earth, Sea R4620 monsters and all deeps; R4621 8 Fire R4622 and hail, snow R4623 and clouds; R4624 Stormy R4625 wind, fulfilling R4626 His word; 9 Mountains R4627 and all hills; Fruit trees R4628 and all cedars; 10 Beasts R4629 and all cattle; Creeping R4630 things and winged fowl; 11 Kings R4631 of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; 12 Both young men and virgins; Old men and children. 13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name R4632 alone is exalted; His glory R4633 is above earth and heaven. 14 And He has lifted R4634 up a horn for His people, Praise R4635 for all His godly ones; Even for the sons of Israel, a people near R4636 to Him. Praise F1549 the F1550 LORD!

Chapter 149

1 Praise F1551 the F1552 LORD! Sing to the LORD a new R4637 song, And His praise in R4638 the congregation of the godly ones. 2 Let Israel be glad in his R4639 Maker; Let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King. R4640 3 Let them praise His name with dancing; R4641 Let them sing praises to Him with timbrel R4642 and lyre. 4 For the LORD takes R4643 pleasure in His people; He will beautify R4644 the afflicted ones with salvation. 5 Let the godly R4645 ones exult in glory; Let them sing R4646 for joy on their beds.

6 Let the high R4647 praises of God be in their mouth, F1553 And a two-edged R4648 sword R4649 in their hand, 7 To execute R4650 vengeance on the nations And punishment on the peoples, 8 To bind their kings with R4651 chains And their nobles R4652 with fetters of iron, 9 To execute R4653 on them the judgment written; This is an honor R4654 for all His godly ones. Praise F1554 the F1555 LORD!

Chapter 150

1 Praise F1556 the F1557 LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; R4655 Praise Him in His mighty expanse. R4656 F1558 2 Praise Him for His mighty R4657 deeds; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. R4658 3 Praise Him with trumpet R4659 sound; Praise Him with harp R4660 and lyre. 4 Praise Him with timbrel R4661 and dancing; Praise Him with stringed R4662 instruments and pipe. R4663 5 Praise Him with loud cymbals; R4664 Praise Him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything R4665 that has breath praise the F1559 LORD. Praise F1560 the F1559 LORD!

Highlights:

We open with one of David's battle songs sung by his men as he marches forth to war (Ps. 144). The second (145) may have been sung by David's soldiers after victory in battle. The last five psalms are a grand outburst of Hallelujah songs to the majesty of our Lord. God reigns; Let all Creation praise the One True Triune God; Let the angels praise God; Let the saints Praise God.

The psalmist begins and ends each of the last five psalms saying: Praise ye the Lord. . . . While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. . . . (We) praise the Lord that we can look to Him for our needs. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God: Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is. . . . Praise ye the Lord (Ps. 146:1-2,5-6,10).

The psalmist continues by saying: Praise ye the Lord. . . . He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. . . . He sendeth forth His Commandment upon earth: His Word runneth very swiftly (147:1,3,15). Kings of the earth, and all people . . . Let them praise the Name of the Lord: for His Name alone is excellent (148:11,13).

As we purpose to truly put Christ first in our lives, we will experience interruptions which demand our time and attention. Even "good things" can keep us from "the best" that God would give us. The loss of “good things” may test us to see if, like Job, we can say: He knoweth the way that I take: when He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold (Job 23:10).

The psalms reveal that nothing comes into our lives by accident. Everything God permits is to develop His highest good in us.

These psalms assure us we have a loving, Heavenly Father who desires the best for His children. To make this possible, He has provided His Word as the One True Guide that reveals how we should live to please Him. Our Lord has provided His Church as a place where we can sing praises to Him, share our testimonies with others who love Him, and receive instruction and inspiration from spiritual leaders. As Christians, we were never meant to be self-sufficient, independent loners but responsible members of His Church. Christ is the Head . . . From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted (held together) by that which every joint supplieth (Eph. 4:15-16).

The Book of Psalms concludes by proclaiming: Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord (Ps. 150:6).

Thought for Today:

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14).

Christ Revealed:

As the One who gives sight to the blind (Ps. 146:8). Jesus Christ opened blind eyes. Then touched He their eyes . . . . And their eyes were opened (Matt. 9:27-30; Mark 10:46-52; John 9:1-41).
