Chapter 139

1 O LORD, You have searched R4338 me and known me. 2 You know R4339 when F1468 I sit down and when F1469 I rise up; You understand R4340 my thought from afar. 3 You scrutinize R4341 F1470 my path F1471 and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even F1472 before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know R4342 it all. 5 You have enclosed R4343 me behind and before, And laid R4344 Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge R4345 is too R4346 wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it.

7 Where R4347 can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If R4348 I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, F1473 behold, You R4349 are there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand will lead R4350 me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness R4351 will overwhelm F1474 me, And the light around me will be night," 12 Even the darkness R4352 is not dark to F1475 You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness R4353 and light are alike to You. 13 For You formed R4354 my inward F1476 parts; You wove R4355 me in my mother's womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I F1477 am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful R4356 are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame R4357 F1478 was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths R4358 of the earth; 16 Your eyes R4359 have seen my unformed substance; And in Your R4360 book were all written The days R4361 that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

17 How precious also are Your thoughts R4362 to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would outnumber R4363 the sand. When I R4364 awake, I am still with You. 19 O that You would slay R4365 the wicked, O God; Depart R4366 from me, therefore, men R4367 of bloodshed. 20 For they speak R4368 against F1479 You wickedly, And Your enemies take R4369 F1480 Your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate R4370 those who hate You, O LORD? And do I not loathe R4371 those who rise up against You? 22 I hate them with the utmost hatred; They have become my enemies. 23 Search R4372 me, O God, and know my heart; Try R4373 me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful R4374 F1481 way in me, And lead R4375 me in the everlasting R4376 way.

Chapter 140

1 Rescue R4377 me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent R4378 men 2 Who devise R4379 evil things in their hearts; They continually R4380 stir up wars. 3 They sharpen R4381 their tongues as a serpent; Poison R4382 of a viper is under their lips. Selah. F1482 4 Keep R4383 me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve R4384 me from violent men Who have purposed F1483 to trip R4385 F1484 up my feet. 5 The proud have hidden R4386 a trap for me, and cords; They have spread a net R4387 by the wayside; F1485 They have set snares R4388 for me. Selah. 6 I said R4389 to the LORD, "You are my God; Give R4390 ear, O LORD, to the voice R4391 of my supplications. 7 "O GOD the Lord, the R4392 strength of my salvation, You have covered R4393 my head in the day of battle. F1487

8 "Do not grant, O LORD, the desires R4394 of the wicked; Do not promote his R4395 evil device, that they not be exalted. Selah. 9 "As for the head of those who surround me, May the mischief R4396 of their lips cover them. 10 "May burning R4397 coals fall upon them; May they be cast R4398 into the fire, Into deep F1488 pits from which they cannot R4399 rise. 11 "May a slanderer F1489 not be established in the earth; May R4400 evil hunt the violent man speedily." F1490 12 I know that the LORD will maintain R4401 the cause of the afflicted And justice R4402 for the poor. 13 Surely the righteous R4403 will give thanks to Your name; The upright R4404 will dwell in Your presence.

Chapter 141

1 O LORD, I call upon You; hasten R4405 to me! Give R4406 ear to my voice when I call to You! 2 May my prayer be counted F1491 as incense R4407 before You; The lifting R4408 up of my hands as the evening R4409 offering. 3 Set a guard, R4410 O LORD, over F1492 my mouth; Keep watch over the door R4411 of my lips. 4 Do R4412 not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice deeds of F1493 wickedness With men who do R4413 iniquity; And do R4414 not let me eat of their delicacies.

5 Let the righteous R4415 smite me in F1494 kindness and reprove me; It is oil R4416 upon the head; Do not let my head refuse it, For F1495 still my prayer is R4417 against F1496 their wicked deeds. 6 Their judges are thrown R4418 down by the sides of the rock, And they hear my words, for they are pleasant. 7 As when one plows R4419 and breaks open the earth, Our bones R4420 have been scattered at the mouth R4421 of Sheol. F1497 8 For my eyes R4422 are toward You, O GOD, the Lord; In You I take R4423 refuge; do R4424 not leave F1499 me defenseless. 9 Keep me from the jaws R4425 F1500 of the trap which they have set for me, And from the snares R4426 of those who do iniquity. 10 Let the wicked fall R4427 into their own nets, While I pass by safely. R4428 F1501

Chapter 142

1 I cry R4429 aloud with my voice to the LORD; I make R4430 supplication with my voice to the LORD. 2 I pour R4431 out my complaint before Him; I declare my trouble R4432 before Him. 3 When my R4433 spirit was F1502 overwhelmed within me, You knew my path. In the way where I walk They have hidden R4434 a trap for me.

4 Look to the right and see; For there is no R4435 one who regards me; There F1503 is no escape R4436 for me; No R4437 one cares for my soul. 5 I cried out to You, O LORD; I said, "You are my R4438 refuge, My portion R4439 in the land R4440 of the living. 6 "Give R4441 heed to my cry, For I am brought R4442 very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are too strong R4443 for me. 7 "Bring R4444 my soul out of prison, So that I may give thanks to Your name; The righteous will surround me, For You will deal R4445 bountifully with me."

Chapter 143

1 Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give R4446 ear to my supplications! Answer me in Your faithfulness, R4447 in Your righteousness! R4448 2 And do R4449 not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no R4450 man living is righteous. 3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to R4451 the ground; He has R4452 made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead. 4 Therefore my R4453 spirit is F1504 overwhelmed within me; My heart is appalled R4454 F1505 within me. 5 I remember R4455 the days of old; I meditate R4456 on all Your doings; I muse R4457 on the work of Your hands. 6 I stretch R4458 out my hands to You; My soul R4459 longs for You, as a parched F1506 land. Selah. F1507

7 Answer R4460 me quickly, O LORD, my spirit R4461 fails; Do R4462 not hide Your face from me, Or I will become like those R4463 who go down to the pit. 8 Let me hear Your lovingkindness R4464 in R4465 the morning; For I trust in R4466 You; Teach me the way R4467 in which I should walk; For to You I lift R4468 up my soul. 9 Deliver R4469 me, O LORD, from my enemies; I F1508 take refuge in You. 10 Teach R4470 me to do Your will, For You are my God; Let Your R4471 good Spirit lead R4472 me on level ground. F1509 11 For R4473 the sake of Your name, O LORD, revive R4474 me. In R4475 Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble. 12 And in Your lovingkindness, cut R4476 F1510 off my enemies And destroy R4477 all those who afflict my soul, For I R4478 am Your servant.

Highlights:

Psalm 139 proclaims the universal presence and infinite knowledge of God. He knows our every thought, word, and deed. This could be any of us speaking to God. The closing prayer is one of the most needed prayers in the whole Bible. The last four psalms reflect David's heartfelt pleas for protection.

Our Creator inspired David to write: O Lord, Thou. . . . art acquainted with all my ways (from the time I was conceived to this very day). . . . Such knowledge is too wonderful for me (beyond my understanding). . . . For Thou hast possessed my reins (formed my inward spirit and heart): Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. . . . when I was made in secret. . . . Thine eyes did see my substance . . . when as yet there was none (Ps. 139:1-16). God reveals that, at conception, David became a person, a living soul. Although, as an unborn infant, he was hidden from human view, as if buried in the earth, his body was no mystery to his Creator, who was skillfully preparing him for his God-ordained destiny on earth.

The Holy Spirit inspired the beloved physician Luke to record what the Angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary: Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His Name JESUS (Luke 1:31). Note that the Lord Jesus Christ was announced as a Person at conception.

God also led Isaiah to prophesy concerning Christ: The Lord hath called Me from the womb; from the bowels (body, internal parts) of My mother hath He made mention of My Name. . . . in the shadow of His hand hath He hid Me. . . . And now, saith the Lord that formed Me from the womb to be His Servant. . . . I will also give Thee for a Light to the Gentiles (Is. 49:1-6).

It should be no surprise that our great Creator not only gives life but also determines that it will begin at conception. God revealed to Jeremiah: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations (Jer. 1:5). If the mothers of David, Isaiah, or Jeremiah had aborted them, they would have murdered great men of God. According to the world's records today it would have just shown more unnamed fetuses. But life is sacred and is given by the Creator for His own purposes.

Jesus said, Suffer (Permit) little children, and forbid them not, to come unto Me: for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt. 19:14).

Thought for Today:

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms (James 5:13).

Christ Revealed:

As the One who deals bountifully with us (Ps. 142:7). I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10; Eph. 3:20).
