Chapter 132

1 Remember, O LORD, on David's behalf, All his R4195 affliction; 2 How he swore to the LORD And vowed to the R4196 Mighty One of Jacob, 3 "Surely I will not enter F1423 my R4197 house, Nor lie F1424 on my bed; 4 I will not give R4198 sleep to my eyes Or slumber to my eyelids, 5 Until I find a place R4199 for the LORD, A F1425 dwelling place for the R4200 Mighty One of Jacob." 6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah, R4201 We found it in the field R4202 of Jaar. F1426 7 Let us go into His dwelling R4203 F1427 place; Let us worship R4204 at His footstool. R4205 8 Arise, R4206 O LORD, to Your resting R4207 place, You and the ark of Your strength. R4208 9 Let Your priests be clothed R4209 with righteousness, And let Your godly R4210 ones sing for joy. 10 For the sake of David Your servant, Do not turn away the face of Your anointed. R4211

11 The LORD has sworn R4212 to David A truth from which He will not turn back: "Of R4213 the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne. 12 "If your sons will keep My covenant And My testimony which I will teach them, Their sons also shall sit R4214 upon your throne forever." 13 For the LORD has chosen R4215 Zion; He has desired R4216 it for His habitation. 14 "This is My resting R4217 place forever; Here I will dwell, R4218 for I have desired it. 15 "I will abundantly bless R4219 her provision; I will satisfy R4220 her needy with bread. 16 "Her priests R4221 also I will clothe with salvation, And her godly R4221 ones will sing aloud for joy. 17 "There I will cause the horn R4222 of David to spring forth; I have prepared a lamp R4223 for Mine anointed. 18 "His enemies I will clothe R4224 with shame, But upon himself his crown R4225 shall shine."

Chapter 133

1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers R4226 to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil R4227 upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron's beard, Coming down upon the edge R4228 of his robes. 3 It is like the dew R4229 of Hermon R4230 Coming down upon the mountains R4231 of Zion; For there the LORD commanded R4232 the blessing--life R4233 forever.

Chapter 134

1 Behold, bless R4234 the LORD, all servants R4235 of the LORD, Who serve R4236 F1428 by R4237 night in the house of the LORD! 2 Lift R4238 up your hands to the sanctuary R4239 And bless the LORD. 3 May the LORD bless R4240 you from Zion, He who made R4241 heaven and earth.

Chapter 135

1 Praise R4242 F1429 the F1430 LORD! Praise the name of the LORD; Praise Him, O servants R4243 of the LORD, 2 You who stand in the house of the LORD, In the courts R4244 of the house of our God! 3 Praise F1431 the F1432 LORD, for the R4245 LORD is good; Sing R4246 praises to His name, for R4247 it is lovely. 4 For the F1433 LORD has chosen R4248 Jacob for Himself, Israel for His own R4249 F1434 possession.

5 For I know that the R4250 LORD is great And that our Lord is above R4251 all gods. 6 Whatever R4252 the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps. 7 He F1435 causes R4253 the vapors F1436 to ascend from the ends of the earth; Who makes R4254 lightnings for the rain, Who brings R4253 forth the wind from His treasuries. 8 He F1437 smote R4255 the firstborn of Egypt, Both F1438 of man and beast. 9 He F1439 sent signs R4256 and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, Upon Pharaoh R4257 and all his servants. 10 He R4258 F1440 smote R4259 many nations And slew mighty kings, 11 Sihon, R4260 king of the Amorites, And Og, R4261 king of Bashan, And all R4262 the kingdoms of Canaan; 12 And He gave R4263 their land as a heritage, A heritage to Israel His people. 13 Your name, R4264 O LORD, is everlasting, Your remembrance, F1441 O LORD, throughout F1442 all generations. 14 For the LORD will judge R4265 His people And will R4266 have compassion on His servants.

15 The idols R4267 of the nations are but silver and gold, The work of man's hands. 16 They have mouths, but they do not speak; They have eyes, but they do not see; 17 They have ears, but they do not hear, Nor is there any breath at all in their mouths. 18 Those who make them will be like them, Yes, everyone who trusts in them. 19 O house of Israel, R4268 bless the LORD; O house of Aaron, bless the LORD; 20 O house of Levi, bless the LORD; You who R4269 revere F1443 the LORD, bless the LORD. 21 Blessed be the LORD from R4270 Zion, Who dwells R4271 in Jerusalem. Praise F1444 the F1445 LORD!

Chapter 136

1 Give R4272 thanks to the LORD, for He R4273 is good, For His R4274 lovingkindness is everlasting. 2 Give thanks to the God R4275 of gods, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 3 Give thanks to the Lord R4276 of lords, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 4 To Him who alone R4277 does great wonders, F1446 For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 5 To Him who made R4278 the heavens with R4279 F1447 skill, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 6 To Him who spread R4280 out the earth above the waters, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 7 To Him who made R4281 the great lights, For His lovingkindness is everlasting: 8 The sun R4282 to rule by F1448 day, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 9 The moon R4283 and stars to rule by F1449 night, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

10 To Him who smote R4284 the F1450 Egyptians in their firstborn, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 11 And brought R4285 Israel out from their midst, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 12 With a strong R4286 hand and an outstretched R4287 arm, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 13 To Him who divided R4288 the Red F1451 Sea asunder, F1452 For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 14 And made R4289 Israel pass through the midst of it, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 15 But He R4290 overthrew F1453 Pharaoh and his army in the Red F1454 Sea, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 16 To Him who led R4291 His people through the wilderness, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 17 To Him who smote R4292 great kings, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 18 And slew R4293 mighty F1455 kings, For His lovingkindness is everlasting: 19 Sihon, R4294 king of the Amorites, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 20 And Og, R4295 king of Bashan, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 21 And gave R4296 their land as a heritage, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 22 Even a heritage to Israel His servant, R4297 For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

23 Who remembered R4298 us in our low estate, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, 24 And has rescued R4299 us from our adversaries, For His lovingkindness is everlasting; 25 Who gives R4300 food to all flesh, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 26 Give thanks to the God R4301 of heaven, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Chapter 137

1 By the rivers R4302 of Babylon, There we sat down and wept, R4303 When we remembered Zion. 2 Upon the willows R4304 F1456 in the midst of it We hung R4305 our harps. F1457 3 For there our captors demanded R4306 F1458 of us songs, F1459 And our R4307 tormentors mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion." 4 How can we sing the R4308 LORD'S song In a foreign land? 5 If I forget R4309 you, O Jerusalem, May my right hand forget F1460 her skill. 6 May my tongue R4310 cling to the roof of my mouth If I do not remember you, If I do not exalt R4311 F1461 Jerusalem Above my chief joy.

7 Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom R4312 The day of Jerusalem, Who said, "Raze it, raze it To R4313 its very foundation." 8 O daughter of Babylon, you devastated R4314 F1462 one, How blessed will be the one who repays R4315 you With the F1463 recompense with which you have repaid us. 9 How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes R4316 your little ones Against the rock.

Chapter 138

1 I R4317 will give You thanks with all my heart; I will sing praises to You before the gods. R4318 2 I will bow down toward R4319 Your holy temple And give R4320 thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; F1464 For You have magnified R4321 Your word F1465 according F1466 to all Your name. 3 On the day I called, R4322 You answered me; You made me bold with strength R4323 in my soul. 4 All R4324 the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, O LORD, When they have heard the words of Your mouth. 5 And they will sing R4325 of the ways of the LORD, For great R4326 is the glory of the LORD.

6 For though R4327 the LORD is exalted, Yet He regards R4328 the lowly, But the haughty R4329 He knows from afar. 7 Though I walk R4330 in the midst of trouble, You will revive R4331 F1467 me; You will stretch R4332 forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save R4333 me. 8 The LORD will accomplish R4334 what concerns me; Your lovingkindness, R4335 O LORD, is everlasting; Do R4336 not forsake the works R4337 of Your hands.

Highlights:

Can we even count the number of times the Lord rescued David? And he never lost a war. The first five chapters in today's reading are full of trust and love for the Lord as David recalls the blessings. He then contrasts the One True God with worthless idols. Do we qualify as the Lord's peculiar (very special) treasure (Ps. 135:4; Ex. 19:5; Titus 2:14; I Pet. 2:9)? Psalm 136 is called The Great Hallel and was sung during Passover.

The psalmist reminds us of how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments (Ps. 133:1-2; Ex. 30:25,30; Lev. 8:12). The oil that was poured upon the head of Aaron, the first high priest, was a foreshadowing of the anointing, indwelling, and outflowing of the Holy Spirit upon believers today. It symbolized the Holy Spirit who, in love, covers as well as permeates the lives of those who have submitted themselves to Him. The same indwelling Holy Spirit lives within all true Christians (I John 2:27). Therefore, in a spirit of love, we should express our oneness without partiality, regardless of race, nationality, education, or wealth, for we are the Body of Christ (I Cor. 12:27).

The key to true unity is to let nothing be done through strife or vainglory (empty conceit, self-seeking or petty ambition); but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves (Phil. 2:3). Our fallen nature is ever prone to distort unwelcome encounters with others and our emotions can create a crisis out of unimportant incidents. Added to this, we all too often selfishly demand our own rights and blame our frustrations on others. Pride, self-will, and an independent spirit are all enemies of the Spirit-filled life. It is Christlike to accept personal offense with patience rather than to react to someone's rudeness. We need to recognize that people's bad attitudes are often momentary frustrations caused by conflicts, sorrows, sufferings, or bad news. God permits difficult people to come into our lives to give us an opportunity to express His love and patience toward them — just as our Lord has made known His love and mercy toward us.

The unity of believers can be compared to a great orchestra with many instruments creating beautiful harmony. To maintain that harmony, we each must stay in tune by following the Master Conductor. With all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring (making every effort) to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:2-3).

Thought for Today:

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting (I Tim. 2:8).

Christ Revealed:

As the descendant of David, who would sit upon David's throne (Ps. 132:11). He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David (Luke 1:32; Acts 2:29-30).
