Chapter 106

1 Praise F1166 the F1167 LORD! Oh give R3369 thanks to the LORD, for He is R3370 good; For His R3371 lovingkindness is everlasting. 2 Who can speak of the mighty R3372 deeds of the LORD, Or can show forth all His praise? 3 How blessed are those who keep justice, F1168 Who F1169 practice R3373 righteousness at all times! 4 Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor R3374 toward F1170 Your people; Visit me with Your salvation, 5 That I may see the prosperity R3375 of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice R3376 in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory R3377 with Your inheritance. F1171

6 We R3378 have sinned like R3379 F1172 our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly. 7 Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; F1173 They did R3380 not remember Your F1174 abundant kindnesses, But rebelled R3381 by the sea, at the Red F1175 Sea. 8 Nevertheless He saved them for R3382 the sake of His name, That He might make R3383 His power known. 9 Thus He rebuked R3384 the Red F1176 Sea and it dried R3385 up, And He led R3386 them through the deeps, as through the wilderness. 10 So He saved R3387 them from the hand F1177 of the one who hated them, And redeemed R3388 them from the hand F1177 of the enemy. 11 The R3389 waters covered their adversaries; Not one of them was left. 12 Then they believed R3390 His words; They sang R3391 His praise.

13 They quickly forgot R3392 His works; They did R3393 not wait for His counsel, 14 But craved R3394 intensely in the wilderness, And tempted R3395 F1178 God in the desert. 15 So He gave R3396 them their request, But sent R3397 a wasting F1179 disease among them. 16 When they became envious R3398 of Moses in the camp, And of Aaron, the holy one of the LORD, 17 The earth R3399 opened and swallowed up Dathan, And engulfed the company F1180 of Abiram. 18 And a fire R3400 blazed up in their company; F1181 The flame consumed the wicked. 19 They made R3401 a calf in Horeb And worshiped a molten image. 20 Thus they exchanged R3402 their glory For the image of an ox that eats grass. 21 They forgot R3403 God their Savior, Who had done great R3404 things in Egypt, 22 Wonders R3405 F1182 in the land of Ham And awesome things by the Red F1183 Sea. 23 Therefore He R3406 said that He would destroy them, Had not Moses R3407 His chosen one stood in the breach before Him, To turn away His wrath from destroying them. 24 Then they despised R3408 the pleasant R3409 land; They did R3410 not believe in His word, 25 But grumbled R3411 in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the LORD. 26 Therefore He swore R3412 F1184 to them That He would cast them down in the wilderness, 27 And that He would cast R3413 their seed among the nations And scatter R3414 them in the lands. 28 They joined R3415 themselves also to Baal-peor, F1185 And ate sacrifices R3416 offered to the dead. 29 Thus they provoked R3417 Him to anger with their deeds, And the plague broke out among them. 30 Then Phinehas stood R3418 up and interposed, And so the plague R3419 was stayed. 31 And it was reckoned R3420 to him for righteousness, To all generations forever. 32 They also provoked R3421 Him to wrath at the waters of Meribah, F1186 So that it went R3422 hard with Moses on their account; 33 Because they were R3423 rebellious against His F1187 Spirit, He spoke rashly with his lips.

34 They did R3424 not destroy the peoples, As the R3425 LORD commanded them, 35 But they R3426 mingled with the nations And learned their practices, F1188 36 And served R3427 their idols, Which R3428 became a snare to them. 37 They even sacrificed R3429 their sons and their daughters to the demons, R3430 38 And shed innocent R3431 blood, The blood of their sons R3432 and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted R3433 with the blood. 39 Thus they became unclean R3434 in their practices, F1189 And played R3435 the harlot in their deeds. 40 Therefore the anger R3436 of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred R3437 His inheritance. R3438 F1190 41 Then He R3439 gave them into the hand of the nations, F1191 And those who hated them ruled over them. 42 Their enemies also oppressed R3440 them, And they were subdued under their power. F1192 43 Many times He would deliver R3441 them; They, however, were rebellious in their counsel, R3442 And so sank R3443 down in their iniquity. 44 Nevertheless He looked upon their distress When He heard R3444 their cry; 45 And He remembered R3445 His covenant for their sake, And relented R3446 F1193 according R3447 to the greatness of His lovingkindness. 46 He also made them objects R3448 of compassion In the presence of all their captors. 47 Save R3449 us, O LORD our God, And gather R3450 us from among the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name And glory R3451 F1194 in Your praise. 48 Blessed R3452 be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, "Amen." Praise F1195 the F1196 LORD!

Chapter 107

1 Oh give R3453 thanks to the LORD, for He R3454 is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 2 Let the R3455 redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed R3456 from the hand of the adversary 3 And gathered R3457 from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. F1197 4 They wandered R3458 in the wilderness in a desert F1198 region; They did not find a way to an F1199 inhabited city. R3459 5 They were hungry and F1200 thirsty; Their soul R3460 fainted within them. 6 Then they cried R3461 out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. 7 He led them also by a straight R3462 F1201 way, To go to an R3463 F1202 inhabited city. 8 Let R3464 them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders F1203 to the sons of men! 9 For He has satisfied R3465 the thirsty F1204 soul, And the hungry R3466 soul He has filled with what is good.

10 There were those who dwelt R3467 in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners R3468 in misery F1205 and chains, F1206 11 Because they had rebelled R3469 against the words of God And spurned R3470 the counsel R3471 of the Most High. 12 Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none R3472 to help. 13 Then they cried R3473 out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. 14 He brought R3474 them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke R3475 their bands apart. 15 Let R3476 them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders F1207 to the sons of men! 16 For He has shattered R3477 gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder.

17 Fools, because of their F1208 rebellious way, And because R3478 of their iniquities, were afflicted. 18 Their soul R3479 abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew R3480 near to the gates R3481 of death. 19 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. 20 He sent R3482 His word and healed R3483 them, And delivered R3484 them from their destructions. F1209 21 Let R3485 them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders F1210 to the sons of men! 22 Let them also offer sacrifices R3486 of thanksgiving, And tell R3487 of His works with joyful singing.

23 Those who go R3488 down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; 24 They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders F1211 in the deep. 25 For He spoke R3489 and raised up a stormy R3490 wind, Which lifted R3491 up the waves of F1212 the sea. 26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted R3492 away in their misery. 27 They reeled and staggered R3493 like a drunken man, And were F1213 at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. 29 He caused R3494 the storm to be still, So that the waves of F1214 the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let R3495 them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders R3496 F1215 to the sons of men! 32 Let them extol R3497 Him also in R3498 the congregation of the people, And praise R3499 Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He changes R3500 F1216 rivers into a wilderness F1217 And springs of water into a thirsty ground; 34 A fruitful R3501 land into a salt R3502 waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. 35 He changes R3503 F1218 a wilderness F1219 into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; 36 And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an R3504 F1220 inhabited city, 37 And sow fields and plant R3505 vineyards, And gather F1221 a fruitful harvest. 38 Also He blesses them and they multiply R3506 greatly, And He does R3507 not let their cattle decrease. 39 When they are diminished R3508 and bowed R3509 down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, 40 He pours R3510 contempt upon princes F1222 And makes R3511 them wander in R3512 a pathless waste. 41 But He sets R3513 the needy securely F1223 on high away from affliction, And makes R3514 his families like a flock. 42 The upright R3515 see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness R3516 shuts its mouth. 43 Who is wise? R3517 Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses R3518 of the LORD.

Highlights:

Want to take a 40-year trip? Travel with God's people as they relive their desert wanderings. They confess their sins, including when they lusted (Ps. 106:14), murmured (106:25), mingled among the heathen (106:35), and shed innocent blood (106:38). Finally, they praise God for their deliverance (note 107:19-20). There is a refrain in vss 8,15, 21,31.

Although God had faithfully blessed Israel, miraculously delivered them from Egyptian slavery, provided the promised land, and given them victory over the Canaanites and great prosperity, they soon forgat His works; they waited not for His counsel . . . and tempted God in the desert (Ps. 106:13-14). Israel's unfaithfulness and numerous sins are brought to our attention. They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image (vs 19); forgat God their Saviour (vs 21); despised the pleasant land, they believed not His Word (vs 24); murmured in their tents (vs 25); did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them (vs 34); But (they) were mingled among the heathen, and. . . . served their idols (vss 35-36).

The psalmist then pointed out the inevitable consequences of sin: Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against His people, insomuch that He abhorred His own inheritance. And He gave them into the hand of the heathen (nations); and they that hated them ruled over them (vss 40-41). But, the Lord's judgment on Israel was mingled with His mercy. When they cried unto the Lord in their trouble . . . He delivered them out of their distresses. . . . Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness. . . . He sent His Word, and healed them (107:6,8,20).

Note carefully that Israel's means of deliverance is the same for everyone today: He sent His Word, and healed them. The psalmist could have simply said: He delivered them out of their distresses. Instead, he chose to say: He sent His Word, and healed them. His Word is Jesus come in the flesh as well as His Written Word: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). His Written Word, when believed and acted upon, is the means God has chosen to supply and satisfy man's every need.

Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! . . . The righteous shall see it, and rejoice. . . . Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the loving-kindness of the Lord (Ps. 107:8,15,21,31,42-43).

Thought for Today:

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man (Luke 21:36).

Christ Revealed:

As the One who maketh the storm a calm (Ps. 107: 29). When Jesus calmed the storm, His awestruck disciples exclaimed: What manner of Man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him! (Matt. 8:27). Jesus offers to calm the storms of our lives and give us His peace (John 14:27).

Word Studies:

106:20 similitude = likeness; 106:29 inventions = deeds, acts; 106:30 stayed = stopped, checked; 107:11 contemned = despised, spurned.
