Chapter 88
1 O LORD, the God R2729 of my salvation, I have cried R2730 out by day and in the night before You. 2 Let my prayer come R2731 before You; Incline R2732 Your ear to my cry! 3 For my soul R2733 has had F933 enough troubles, And my R2734 life has drawn near to Sheol. F934 4 I am reckoned among those who go R2735 down to the pit; I have become like a man without R2736 strength, 5 Forsaken F935 among R2737 the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And they are cut R2738 off from Your hand. 6 You have put me in the R2739 lowest pit, In dark R2740 places, in the depths. R2741 7 Your wrath has R2742 rested upon me, And You have afflicted me with all R2743 Your waves. Selah. F936 8 You have removed my R2744 acquaintances far from me; You have made me an object R2745 F937 of loathing to them; I am shut R2746 up and cannot go out. 9 My eye R2747 has wasted away because of affliction; I have called R2748 upon You every day, O LORD; I have spread R2749 out my hands F938 to You.
10 Will You perform wonders for the dead? Will the R2750 departed F939 spirits rise and praise You? Selah. 11 Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? F940 12 Will Your wonders be made known in the darkness? R2751 And Your righteousness F941 in the land of forgetfulness? 13 But I, O LORD, have cried out to R2752 You for help, And in R2753 the morning my prayer comes before You. 14 O LORD, why do R2754 You reject my soul? Why do You hide R2755 Your face from me? 15 I was afflicted and about R2756 to die from my youth on; I suffer Your R2757 terrors; I am overcome. F942 16 Your burning R2758 anger has passed over me; Your terrors have destroyed R2759 F943 me. 17 They have surrounded R2760 me like R2761 water all day long; They have encompassed R2762 me altogether. 18 You have removed lover R2763 and friend far from me; My acquaintances are in darkness.
Chapter 89
1 I will sing R2764 of the lovingkindness of the LORD forever; To all generations I will make R2765 known Your faithfulness R2766 with my mouth. 2 For I have said, "Lovingkindness R2767 will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness." R2768 3 "I have made a covenant with My R2769 chosen; I have sworn R2770 to David My servant, 4 I will establish your seed R2771 forever And build up your throne R2772 to all generations." Selah. F944
5 The heavens R2773 will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in R2774 the assembly of the holy R2775 ones. 6 For who R2776 in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons R2777 F945 of the mighty is like the LORD, 7 A God greatly R2778 feared in the council of the holy R2779 ones, And awesome R2780 above all those who are around Him? 8 O LORD God of hosts, who R2781 is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. 9 You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still R2782 them. 10 You Yourself crushed Rahab R2783 F947 like one who is slain; You scattered R2784 Your enemies with Your F948 mighty arm. 11 The heavens R2785 are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world R2786 and all F949 it contains, You have founded them. 12 The north R2787 and the south, You have created them; Tabor R2788 and Hermon R2789 shout R2790 for joy at Your name. 13 You have a F950 strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right R2791 hand is exalted. 14 Righteousness R2792 and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness R2793 and truth F951 go before You.
15 How blessed are the people who know the joyful R2794 F952 sound! O LORD, they walk in the light R2795 of Your countenance. 16 In Your R2796 name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted. 17 For You are the glory of their R2797 strength, And by Your favor our F953 horn R2798 is exalted. 18 For our shield R2799 belongs to the LORD, And F954 our king to the Holy R2800 One of Israel.
19 Once F955 You spoke in vision to Your godly ones, F956 And said, "I have given F957 help to one who is mighty; R2801 I have exalted one chosen R2802 from the people. 20 "I have found R2803 David My servant; With My holy oil R2804 I have anointed him, 21 With whom My R2805 hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen R2806 him. 22 "The enemy will not deceive F958 him, Nor the son R2807 F959 of wickedness afflict him. 23 "But I shall crush R2808 his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him. 24 "My faithfulness R2809 and My lovingkindness will be with him, And in My name his horn R2810 will be exalted. 25 "I shall also set his hand on R2811 the sea And his right hand on the rivers. 26 "He will cry to Me, `You are my R2812 Father, My God, and the rock R2813 of my salvation.' 27 "I also shall make him My firstborn, R2814 The highest R2815 of the kings of the earth. 28 "My lovingkindness R2816 I will keep for him forever, And My covenant R2817 shall be confirmed to him. 29 "So I will establish his descendants R2818 F960 forever And his throne R2819 as R2820 the days of heaven. 30 "If his sons forsake R2821 My law And do not walk in My judgments, 31 If they violate F961 My statutes And do not keep My commandments, 32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod R2822 And their iniquity with stripes. 33 "But I will not break off My R2823 lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. 34 "My covenant R2824 I will not violate, F962 Nor will I alter R2825 the F963 utterance of My lips. 35 "Once F964 I have sworn R2826 by My holiness; I will not lie to David. 36 "His descendants R2827 F965 shall endure forever And his throne R2828 as R2829 the sun before Me. 37 "It shall be established forever like R2830 the moon, And the witness R2831 in the sky is faithful." Selah. F966
38 But You have cast R2832 off and rejected, R2833 You have been full of wrath against F967 Your anointed. R2834 39 You have spurned R2835 the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned R2836 his R2837 crown in F968 the dust. 40 You have broken R2838 down all his walls; You have brought R2839 his strongholds to ruin. 41 All R2840 who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a reproach R2841 to his neighbors. 42 You have exalted R2842 the right hand of his adversaries; You have made R2843 all his enemies rejoice. 43 You also turn back the edge of his sword And have not R2844 made him stand in battle. 44 You have made his splendor R2845 F969 to cease And cast his throne to the ground. 45 You have shortened R2846 the days of his youth; You have covered R2847 him with shame. Selah. 46 How R2848 long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath R2849 burn like fire? 47 Remember R2850 what F970 my span of life is; For what vanity R2851 You F971 have created all the sons of men! 48 What man can live and not see R2852 death? Can he deliver R2853 his soul from the power F972 of Sheol? F973 Selah. 49 Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord, Which You swore R2854 to David in Your faithfulness? 50 Remember, O Lord, the reproach R2855 of Your servants; How F974 I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples, 51 With which Your R2856 enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your R2857 anointed. 52 Blessed R2858 be the LORD forever! Amen and Amen.
Chapter 90
1 Lord, You have been our dwelling R2859 F975 place in all generations. 2 Before the R2860 mountains were born Or F976 You gave R2861 birth to the earth and the world, Even from R2862 everlasting to everlasting, You are God. 3 You turn R2863 man back into dust And say, "Return, O children of men." 4 For a R2864 thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday R2865 when it passes by, Or F977 as a watch R2866 in the night. 5 You have R2867 swept F978 them away like a flood, they fall R2868 F979 asleep; In the morning they are like grass R2869 which sprouts F980 anew. 6 In the morning it flourishes R2870 and sprouts F981 anew; Toward evening it fades R2871 and withers R2872 away.
7 For we have been consumed R2873 by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been dismayed. F982 8 You have placed R2874 our iniquities before You, Our secret R2875 sins in the light of Your presence. 9 For all R2876 our days have declined in Your fury; We have finished our years like a sigh. F983 10 As for the days of our life, F984 they F985 contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty R2877 years, Yet their pride is but labor R2878 and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly R2879 away. 11 Who understands F986 the power R2880 of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear R2881 that F987 is due You?
12 So teach R2882 us to number our days, That we may present R2883 F988 to You a heart of wisdom. 13 Do return, R2884 O LORD; how R2885 long will it be? And be F989 sorry R2886 for Your servants. 14 O satisfy R2887 us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, That we may sing R2888 for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make R2889 us glad according F990 to the days You have afflicted us, And the years R2890 we have seen evil. F991 16 Let Your work R2891 appear to Your servants And Your majesty R2892 to F992 their children. 17 Let the favor R2893 of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm R2894 F993 for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm F993 the work of our hands.
Chapter 91
1 He who dwells in the shelter R2895 of the Most High Will abide in the shadow R2896 of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, "My refuge R2897 and my fortress, R2898 My God, in whom I trust!" R2899 3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare R2900 of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. R2901 4 He will cover R2902 you with His pinions, And under R2903 His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness R2904 is a shield R2905 and bulwark. 5 You will R2906 not be afraid of the terror R2907 by night, Or of the arrow R2908 that flies by day; 6 Of the pestilence R2909 that stalks F994 in darkness, Or of the destruction R2910 that lays waste at noon. 7 A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand, But it R2911 shall not approach you. 8 You will only look on with your eyes And see R2912 the recompense of the wicked.
9 For F995 you have made the LORD, my R2913 refuge, Even the Most High, your R2914 dwelling place. 10 No R2915 evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent. F996 11 For He will give His R2916 angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear R2917 you up in their hands, That you do not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread R2918 upon the lion and cobra, The young lion and the serpent F997 you will trample down. 14 "Because R2919 he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set R2920 him securely on high, because he has known R2921 My name. 15 "He will call R2922 upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; F998 I will rescue him and honor R2923 him. 16 "With a F999 long R2924 life I will satisfy him And let R2925 F1000 him see My salvation."

Highlights:
Have you ever despaired in the long hours of night, calling out to God in your darkest hours like the psalmist in today's reading? Or, have you experienced the answer of God breaking forth in the dawn bringing light through His wonderful mercy as in this magnificent Psalm 89? Don't miss the 91st, one of the best-loved psalms, which pledges amazing promises of blessings.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Ps. 91:1). This is one whose heart is set on being obedient to the Lord. To abide under the shadow of the Almighty there is a need to draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded (James 4:8). When in doubt, abstain from all appearance of evil (I Thess. 5:22).
The psalmist expressed the utmost confidence in the loving care of God when he said: Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day (Ps. 91:5). The psalmist then assured the faithful, saying: Because thou hast made the Lord . . . thy habitation (dwelling place); There shall no evil befall thee. . . . For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways (91:9-11).
Satan, a fallen angel, quoted these verses to Jesus after His 40-day fast in an attempt to persuade Jesus to leap off the pinnacle of the Temple. Satan said: If Thou be the Son of God (meaning: Since [or to prove] You are the Son of God), cast Thyself down: for it is written, He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee: and in their hands they shall bear Thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against a stone (Matt. 4:6; Ps. 91:11-12). There are some who love the promises of God but who disregard the conditions of those promises. Our Lord set the example when He responded to Satan by quoting Scripture which warns not to tempt the Lord God: It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt (test) the Lord thy God (Matt. 4:7; also Deut. 6:16). We have no assurance that the Lord's angels will keep us if we choose "ways" that serve self and misapply His Word.
Satan has deceived many by saying: "Your situation is an exception" or "Just this one time" or "Be broadminded; everyone is doing it." He also uses examples of hypocrites to deceive some by pointing out: "Religious people do these things, so why shouldn't you?" We must continually be casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (II Cor. 10:5).
Thought for Today:
The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth labourers into His harvest (Luke 10:2).
Christ Revealed:
By the seed (descendants) of David (Ps. 89:3-4). Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed (descendants) of David according to the flesh (Rom. 1:3; also Matt. 1:1; Luke 3:31-32).
Word Studies:
88:13 prevent = come before; 89:10 Rahab in this context is a poetic name for Egypt (see 87:4; Isaiah 51:9); 89:24 horn be exalted = authority shall increase; 89:41 spoil = plunder; 90:13 let it repent thee concerning = change your judgment to compassion on; 91:13 dragon = serpent, a reference to Satan. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years (Revelation 20:2; see also 12:3-4,7,9,13,16-17;13:2,4,11).
