Chapter 81

1 Sing R2555 for joy to God our strength; R2556 Shout joyfully R2557 to the God R2558 of Jacob. 2 Raise a song, strike the R2559 timbrel, The sweet sounding lyre R2560 with the harp. R2561 3 Blow the trumpet at the new R2562 moon, At the full moon, on our feast R2563 day. 4 For it is a statute for Israel, An ordinance of the God of Jacob. 5 He established it for a testimony in Joseph When he went R2564 F883 throughout the land of Egypt. I heard a language R2565 that I did not know: 6 "I relieved R2566 F884 his shoulder of the burden, His hands were freed from the basket. F885 7 "You called R2567 in trouble and I rescued you; I answered R2568 you in the hiding place of thunder; I proved you at the waters R2569 of Meribah. Selah. F886

8 "Hear, R2570 O My people, and I will admonish F887 you; O Israel, if you would R2571 listen to Me! 9 "Let there be no strange R2572 god among you; Nor shall you worship any foreign god. 10 "I, R2573 the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open R2574 your mouth wide and I will fill R2575 it. 11 "But My people did R2576 not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey F888 Me. 12 "So I gave R2577 them F889 over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk in their own devices. 13 "Oh that My people would R2578 listen to Me, That Israel would walk R2579 in My ways! 14 "I would quickly subdue R2580 their enemies And turn R2581 My hand against their adversaries. 15 "Those R2582 who hate the LORD would pretend R2583 obedience to Him, And their time of punishment would be forever. 16 "But F890 I would feed you with the finest R2584 F891 of the wheat, And with honey R2585 from the rock I would satisfy you."

Chapter 82

1 God takes His stand R2586 in His F892 own congregation; He judges R2587 in the midst of the rulers. R2588 F893 2 How long will you judge R2589 unjustly And show R2590 partiality to the wicked? Selah. F894 3 Vindicate R2591 the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. 4 Rescue R2592 the weak and needy; Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked. 5 They do R2593 not know nor do they understand; They walk R2594 about in darkness; All the foundations R2595 of the earth are shaken.

6 I F895 said, R2596 "You are gods, And all of you are sons R2597 of the Most High. 7 "Nevertheless you R2598 will die like men And fall like any one R2599 of the princes." 8 Arise, R2600 O God, judge R2601 the earth! For it is You who possesses R2602 all the nations.

Chapter 83

1 O God, do R2603 not remain quiet; Do R2604 not be silent and, O God, do not be still. 2 For behold, Your enemies make R2605 an uproar, And those R2606 who hate You have exalted R2607 F896 themselves. 3 They make R2608 shrewd plans against Your people, And conspire F897 together against Your R2609 treasured F898 ones. 4 They have said, "Come, and let R2610 us wipe them out as F899 a nation, That the name R2611 of Israel be remembered no more." 5 For they have conspired R2612 F900 together with one mind; Against You they make a covenant: 6 The tents of Edom R2613 and the Ishmaelites, R2614 Moab R2615 and the Hagrites; R2616 7 Gebal R2617 and Ammon R2618 and Amalek, R2619 Philistia R2620 with the inhabitants of Tyre; R2621 8 Assyria R2622 also has joined with them; They have become a F901 help to the children R2623 of Lot. Selah. F902

9 Deal with them as R2624 with Midian, As with R2625 Sisera and Jabin at the torrent of Kishon, 10 Who were destroyed at En-dor, Who became R2626 as dung for the ground. 11 Make their nobles like Oreb R2627 and Zeeb And all their princes like Zebah R2628 and Zalmunna, 12 Who said, "Let R2629 us possess for ourselves The pastures R2630 of God." 13 O my God, make them like the whirling R2631 F903 dust, Like chaff R2632 before the wind. 14 Like fire R2633 that burns the forest And like a flame that sets R2634 the mountains on fire, 15 So pursue them with R2635 Your tempest And terrify them with Your storm. 16 Fill R2636 their faces with dishonor, That they may seek Your name, O LORD. 17 Let them be ashamed R2637 and dismayed forever, And let them be humiliated and perish, 18 That they may know R2638 that You R2639 alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most R2640 High over all the earth.

Chapter 84

1 How lovely are Your dwelling R2641 places, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul R2642 longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living R2643 God. 3 The bird also has found a house, And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even Your altars, R2644 O LORD of hosts, My R2645 King and my God. 4 How blessed R2646 are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever R2647 praising You. Selah. F904 5 How blessed is the man whose strength R2648 is in You, In whose F905 heart are the highways R2649 to Zion! 6 Passing through the valley of Baca F906 they make it a spring; F907 The early R2650 rain also covers it with blessings. 7 They go R2651 from strength to strength, Every F908 one of them appears R2652 before God in Zion.

8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; Give ear, O God R2654 of Jacob! Selah. 9 Behold our shield, R2655 O God, And look upon the face of Your R2656 anointed. 10 For a R2657 day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the LORD God is a R2658 sun and shield; R2659 The LORD gives grace and glory; R2660 No R2661 good thing does He withhold from F909 those who walk uprightly. F910 12 O LORD of hosts, How blessed R2662 is the man who trusts in You!

Chapter 85

1 O LORD, You showed favor R2663 to Your land; You restored R2664 F911 the captivity of Jacob. 2 You forgave R2665 the iniquity of Your people; You covered R2666 all their sin. Selah. F912 3 You withdrew R2667 all Your fury; You turned R2668 away from Your burning anger. 4 Restore R2669 us, O God of our salvation, And cause R2670 Your indignation toward us to cease. 5 Will You R2671 be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all F913 generations? 6 Will You not Yourself revive R2672 F914 us again, That Your people may rejoice R2673 in You? 7 Show us Your lovingkindness, O LORD, And grant R2674 us Your salvation.

8 I F915 will hear what God the LORD will say; For He will speak R2675 peace to His people, to F916 His godly ones; But let them not turn R2676 back to folly. F917 9 Surely His R2677 salvation is near to those who fear F918 Him, That glory R2678 may dwell in our land. 10 Lovingkindness R2679 and truth F919 have met together; Righteousness R2680 and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth F920 springs R2681 from the earth, And righteousness looks down from heaven. 12 Indeed, the R2682 LORD will give what is good, And our land R2683 will yield its produce. 13 Righteousness R2684 will go before Him And will make His footsteps into a way.

Chapter 86

1 Incline R2685 Your ear, O LORD, and answer me; For I am afflicted R2686 and needy. 2 Preserve R2687 my soul, F921 for I am a godly R2688 man; O You my God, save Your servant who trusts R2689 in You. 3 Be gracious R2690 to me, O Lord, For to R2691 You I cry all day long. 4 Make glad the soul of Your servant, For to You, O Lord, I R2692 lift up my soul. 5 For You, Lord, are good, R2693 and ready R2694 to forgive, And abundant R2695 in lovingkindness to all who call upon You. 6 Give R2696 ear, O LORD, to my prayer; And give heed to the voice of my supplications! 7 In the R2697 day of my trouble I shall call upon You, For You R2698 will answer me.

8 There is no R2699 one like You among the gods, O Lord, Nor are there any works like R2700 Yours. 9 All R2701 nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And they shall glorify Your name. 10 For You are great R2702 and do R2703 wondrous F922 deeds; You alone are R2704 God. 11 Teach R2705 me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite R2706 my heart to fear Your name. 12 I will give R2707 thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And will glorify Your name forever. 13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great, And You have delivered R2708 my soul from the depths F923 of Sheol. F924 14 O God, arrogant men have risen R2709 up against me, And a F925 band of violent men have sought my life, F926 And they have not set You before them. 15 But You, O Lord, are a God merciful R2710 and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth. F927 16 Turn R2711 to me, and be gracious to me; Oh grant R2712 Your strength to Your servant, And save the son R2713 of Your handmaid. 17 Show R2714 me a sign for good, That those who hate me may see R2715 it and be ashamed, Because You, O LORD, have R2716 helped me and comforted me.

Chapter 87

1 His foundation R2717 is in the holy mountains. 2 The LORD loves R2718 the gates of Zion More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob. 3 Glorious R2719 things are spoken of you, O city R2720 of God. Selah. F928

4 "I shall mention Rahab R2721 F929 and Babylon among F930 those who know Me; Behold, Philistia and Tyre R2722 with Ethiopia: R2723 F931 `This one was born there.' " 5 But of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her"; And the Most High Himself will establish R2724 her. 6 The LORD will count when He registers R2725 the peoples, "This one was born there." Selah. 7 Then those who sing R2726 as well as those who play R2727 F932 the flutes shall say, "All my springs R2728 of joy are in you."

Highlights:

How sad! God, the Creator of the world, speaks; then He waits for His indifferent servants: I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt. . . . but My people would not hearken to My voice. . . . they walked in their own counsels (Ps. 81:10-12). However, in times of trouble, the people quickly pray for protection. Then our merciful Father forgives and the exiles return. The love of God is clearly expressed: No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly (84:11).

The Holy Spirit guided David to unite the only two weapons of our spiritual warfare — prayer and the inspired Word of God. Psalm 86 expresses the power we have when these become our way of life. When David prayed: Bow down Thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy (Ps. 86:1), he was acknowledging his dependence on God (86:2). He continued to pray: Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto Thee daily (86:3). Although David was the king of Israel he recognized the lordship of God over his life (86:4). He often spoke of himself as the servant of the Lord in the psalms.

David continued in worship to confess the mercy of God and His readiness to forgive. He expressed with utmost confidence that God listens to His people's prayers and delivers them from all harm regardless of their circumstances (86:5,7,13,15). The godly person does not depend upon previous learning to continue a day-by-day walk in the way of truth, but upon the continual daily guidance of God through His Word. Instruction is much more than just information; it is also the means to understand His will and to be obedient, for it carries the thought of correction (86:11). The child of God never graduates from His school of instruction; that is why all of us need to read His Word each day.

A commitment to Christ to be the Lord of your life is essential. The Apostle Peter recognized this when he admonished us to diligently build upon our faith virtue (moral excellence), then knowledge, then temperance (self-control), then patience, then godliness, then brotherly kindness, which will produce in us genuine charity (love) to do the will of God (II Pet. 1:5-8). The God who created us has made everything which pertains to life and godliness available to us. His power is made possible as we read His Word, for the Word of God is quick (living and active), and powerful (Heb. 4:12). We have the potential to live in obedience to His Word. But, we must be faithful day-by-day and take the initiative. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom. 10:17).

Thought for Today:

Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you (Luke 6:28).

Christ Revealed:

By Jerusalem, from where the psalmist declared all of the springs (sources) of joy and happiness emanate (Ps. 87:7). Jesus is the source of our joy as the angel announced at His birth (Luke 2:10). Jesus also declared: These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full (John 15:11).

Word Studies:

82:1 among the gods = earthly rulers and judges; 82:4 rid = rescue; 82:5 foundations . . . out of course = administration of justice is ignored; 82:6 Ye are gods = You are My representatives; 83:2 lifted up the head = exalted themselves.
