Chapter 67
1 God be gracious to us and bless R1945 us, And cause R1946 His face to shine upon F641 us-- Selah. F642 2 That Your R1947 way may be known on the earth, Your R1948 salvation among all nations. 3 Let the peoples R1949 praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 4 Let the nations R1950 be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge R1951 the peoples with uprightness And guide R1952 the nations on the earth. Selah. 5 Let the peoples R1953 praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 6 The earth R1954 has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses R1955 us. 7 God blesses us, That F643 all R1956 the ends of the earth may fear Him.
Chapter 68
1 Let F644 God R1957 arise, let F645 His enemies be scattered, And let F646 those who hate Him flee before Him. 2 As smoke R1958 is driven away, so drive them away; As wax R1959 melts before the fire, So let the wicked R1960 perish before God. 3 But let the righteous R1961 be glad; let them exult before God; Yes, let them rejoice with gladness. 4 Sing to God, sing R1962 praises to His name; Lift R1963 F647 up a song for Him who rides R1964 through the deserts, Whose name R1965 is the F648 LORD, and exult before Him. 5 A father R1966 of the fatherless and a judge R1967 for F649 the widows, Is God in His holy R1968 habitation. 6 God makes R1969 F650 a home for the lonely; He leads R1970 out the prisoners into prosperity, Only the R1971 rebellious dwell in a parched land.
7 O God, when You went R1972 forth before Your people, When You marched R1973 through the wilderness, Selah. F651 8 The earth R1974 quaked; The heavens R1975 also dropped rain at the presence of God; Sinai R1976 F652 itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel. 9 You shed R1977 abroad a plentiful rain, O God; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched. F653 10 Your creatures settled in it; You provided R1978 in Your goodness for the poor, O God. 11 The Lord gives the command; F654 The women R1979 who proclaim the good tidings are a great host: 12 "Kings R1980 of armies flee, they flee, And she who remains at home will divide R1981 the spoil!" 13 When F655 you lie down among R1982 the sheepfolds, F656 You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver, And its pinions with glistening gold. 14 When the Almighty scattered R1983 the kings there, F657 It was snowing in Zalmon. R1984
15 A mountain R1985 F658 of God is the mountain of Bashan; A mountain of many peaks is the mountain of Bashan. 16 Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks, At the mountain which God has desired R1986 for His abode? Surely the R1987 LORD will dwell there forever. 17 The chariots R1988 of God are myriads, F659 thousands R1989 upon thousands; The F660 Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness. 18 You have ascended R1990 on high, You have led R1991 captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men, Even among the rebellious also, that the F661 LORD God may dwell there. 19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears R1992 our burden, The R1993 God who is our salvation. Selah. 20 God is to us a God R1994 of deliverances; And to R1995 GOD the Lord belong escapes from F663 death. 21 Surely God will shatter R1996 the head of His enemies, The hairy crown of him who goes on in his guilty deeds.
22 The Lord said, F664 "I R1997 will bring them back from Bashan. I will bring them back from the depths of the sea; 23 That your R1998 F665 foot may shatter them in blood, The tongue of your dogs R1999 may have its portion from your enemies." 24 They have seen Your R2000 procession, F666 O God, The procession F666 of my God, my King, into R2001 F667 the sanctuary. 25 The singers R2002 went on, the musicians after them, In F668 the midst of the maidens R2003 beating tambourines. 26 Bless R2004 God in the congregations, Even the LORD, you who are of the fountain R2005 of Israel. 27 There is Benjamin, R2006 the youngest, F669 ruling F670 them, The princes of Judah in their throng, The princes of Zebulun, R2007 the princes of Naphtali. 28 Your F671 God has commanded R2008 your strength; Show Yourself strong, O God, who R2009 have acted on F672 our behalf. 29 Because F673 of Your temple at Jerusalem Kings R2010 will bring gifts to You. 30 Rebuke the beasts R2011 in F674 the reeds, The herd of bulls R2012 with the calves of the peoples, Trampling under foot the pieces of silver; He has scattered R2013 the peoples who delight in war. 31 Envoys will come out of Egypt; R2014 Ethiopia R2015 F675 will quickly stretch out her hands to God.
32 Sing to God, O kingdoms R2016 of the earth, Sing R2017 praises to the Lord, Selah. 33 To Him who rides R2018 upon the highest R2019 F676 heavens, which are from ancient times; Behold, He R2020 speaks F677 forth with His voice, a mighty R2021 voice. 34 Ascribe R2022 strength to God; His majesty is over Israel And His R2023 strength is in the skies. F678 35 O F679 God, You are awesome R2024 from Your sanctuary. F680 The God of Israel Himself gives R2025 strength and power to the people. Blessed R2026 be God!
Chapter 69
1 Save me, O God, For the waters R2027 have threatened F681 my life. 2 I have sunk in deep mire, R2028 and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood R2029 F682 overflows me. 3 I am weary R2030 with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes R2031 fail while I wait for my God. 4 Those who R2032 hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; Those who would destroy F683 me are R2033 powerful, being wrongfully my enemies; What R2034 I did not steal, I then have to restore. 5 O God, it is You who knows my R2035 folly, And my R2036 wrongs are not hidden from You. 6 May those who wait for You not be R2037 ashamed through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel, 7 Because for R2038 Your sake I have borne reproach; Dishonor R2039 has covered my face. 8 I have become estranged R2040 from F685 my brothers And an alien to my mother's sons. 9 For zeal R2041 for Your house has consumed me, And the R2042 reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. 10 When I wept in R2043 my soul with fasting, It became my reproach. 11 When I made sackcloth R2044 my clothing, I became a R2045 byword to them. 12 Those who sit R2046 in the gate talk about me, And I am the song R2047 F686 of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, at R2048 an acceptable time; O God, in the greatness R2049 of Your lovingkindness, Answer me with Your F687 saving truth. 14 Deliver me from the mire R2050 and do not let me sink; May I be delivered R2051 from my F688 foes and from the deep R2050 F689 waters. 15 May the flood R2052 F690 of water not overflow me Nor the deep swallow me up, Nor the pit R2053 shut its mouth on me. 16 Answer me, O LORD, for Your R2054 lovingkindness is good; According R2055 to the greatness of Your compassion, turn R2056 to me, 17 And do R2057 not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in R2058 distress; answer me quickly. 18 Oh draw near to my soul and redeem R2059 it; Ransom R2060 me because of my enemies! 19 You know my reproach R2061 and my shame and my dishonor; All my adversaries are before F691 You. 20 Reproach has broken R2062 my heart and I am so sick. And I R2063 looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for comforters, R2064 but I found none. 21 They also gave me gall R2065 F692 for F693 my food And for my thirst they gave R2066 me vinegar to drink.
22 May their R2067 table before them become a snare; And when R2068 F694 they are in peace, may it become a trap. 23 May their eyes R2069 grow dim so that they cannot see, And make their loins R2070 shake continually. 24 Pour R2071 out Your indignation on them, And may Your burning anger overtake them. 25 May their camp R2072 F695 be desolate; May none dwell in their tents. 26 For they have persecuted R2073 him whom You R2074 Yourself have smitten, And they tell of the pain of those whom You R2075 have wounded. F696 27 Add iniquity R2076 to their iniquity, And may R2077 they not come into Your R2078 righteousness. 28 May they be blotted R2079 out of the book R2080 of life And may they not be recorded R2081 F697 with the righteous. 29 But I am afflicted R2082 and in pain; May F698 Your salvation, O God, set R2083 me securely on high.
30 I will praise R2084 the name of God with song And magnify R2085 Him with thanksgiving. R2086 31 And it will please R2087 the LORD better than an ox Or a young bull with horns and hoofs. 32 The humble R2088 have F699 seen it and are glad; You who seek God, let R2089 your heart revive. F700 33 For the R2090 LORD hears the needy And does R2091 not despise His who are prisoners. 34 Let heaven R2092 and earth praise Him, The seas and everything R2093 that moves in them. 35 For God will save R2094 Zion and build R2095 the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess R2096 it. 36 The descendants R2097 F701 of His servants will inherit it, And those who love His name will R2098 dwell in it.
Chapter 70
1 O R2099 God, hasten to deliver me; O LORD, hasten to my help! 2 Let R2100 those be ashamed and humiliated Who seek my life; F702 Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in F703 my hurt. 3 Let R2101 those be turned F704 back because of their shame Who say, "Aha, aha!" 4 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, "Let God be magnified." 5 But I R2102 am afflicted and needy; Hasten R2103 to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.
Chapter 71
1 In R2104 You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed. 2 In R2105 Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; Incline R2106 Your ear to me and save me. 3 Be R2107 to me a rock of habitation R2108 to which I may continually come; You have given commandment R2109 to save me, For You are my R2110 rock F705 and my fortress. 4 Rescue R2111 me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the grasp F706 of the wrongdoer and ruthless man, 5 For You are my hope; R2112 O Lord GOD, You are my confidence R2113 from my youth. 6 By F708 You I have been sustained R2114 from my birth; You are He who took R2115 me from my mother's womb; My praise R2116 is continually of F709 You. 7 I have become a marvel R2117 to many, For You are my R2118 strong refuge. 8 My mouth R2119 is filled with Your praise And with Your R2120 glory all day long. 9 Do not cast me off in the time R2121 of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails. 10 For my enemies have spoken against F710 me; And those who watch R2122 for my life F711 have R2123 consulted together, 11 Saying, "God R2124 has forsaken him; Pursue and seize him, for there is no R2125 one to deliver." 12 O God, do R2126 not be far from me; O my God, hasten R2127 to my help! 13 Let those who are adversaries of my soul be ashamed R2128 and consumed; Let them be covered R2129 with reproach and dishonor, who seek R2130 to F712 injure me.
14 But as for me, I will hope R2131 continually, And will praise R2132 F713 You yet more and more. 15 My mouth R2133 shall tell of Your righteousness And of Your R2134 salvation all day long; For I do R2135 not know the sum F714 of them. 16 I will come with R2136 the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD; I will make R2137 mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone. 17 O God, You have R2138 taught me from my youth, And I still declare R2139 Your wondrous deeds. 18 And even when I am old R2140 and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare R2141 Your strength F716 to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. 19 For F717 Your righteousness, R2142 O God, reaches to the heavens, F718 You who have done R2143 great things; O God, who R2144 is like You? 20 You who have shown R2145 me F719 many troubles and distresses Will revive R2146 me F719 again, And will bring me F719 up again from R2147 the depths of the earth. 21 May You increase my greatness R2148 And turn to comfort R2149 me. 22 I will also praise You with a R2150 F720 harp, Even Your truth, F721 O my God; To You I will sing praises with the lyre, R2151 O Holy R2152 One of Israel. 23 My lips will shout R2153 for joy when I sing praises to You; And my soul, R2154 which You have redeemed. 24 My tongue R2155 also will utter Your righteousness all day long; For they are ashamed, R2156 for they are humiliated who seek my F722 hurt.

Highlights:
A mixture of worship, giving glory to God, and pleas for His help in trouble to relieve Israel from its adversaries. A Messianic prophecy is recorded here and its fulfillment proclaimed in the New Testament. Today's reading ends with the personal testimony of a devout old man praising the Holy One of Israel (Ps. 71:9,22-23) for his redemption.
The psalmist encourages everyone to rejoice and sing for joy (Ps. 67:4). Furthermore, singing and giving praise to the Lord always brings satisfaction and peace of mind. While we await Jesus' return from heaven, the psalmist reminds us to rejoice: Let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice. Sing unto God, sing praises to His Name: extol (praise) Him that rideth upon the heavens by His Name JAH, and rejoice before Him (68:3-4). JAH is short for the Name of Jehovah (Yahweh), who is ever in the present.
Let us join with the psalmist in a proclamation of praise and adoration for Jesus Christ, our wonderful Savior and Lord, who generously pours out His blessings upon us. Let the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee (67:3).
The psalmist also foretold the resurrection of Christ. A numerous host of people will proclaim the glorious news of His victory. Jesus ascended on high, Thou hast led captivity captive. . . . and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death (68:18,20). All the kingdoms of the earth sing praises unto the Lord (68:32) as they express their heartfelt worship. Paul explained the meaning of this psalm as a prophecy concerning Christ, who ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men (Eph. 4:8). This means He conquered death and Satan, who had held mankind in bondage (Heb. 2:15). Gifts were given to apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip the people of God to do His work, and to help them mature, and grow in the likeness of Christ (Eph. 4:11-12).
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My Word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. . . . Marvel not at this . . . all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:24,28-29).
Thought for Today:
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them (Mark 11:24).
Christ Revealed:
As the One who led captivity captive (Ps. 68:18). With His resurrection power, Jesus broke the captive power of Satan. When He led the Old Testament saints from paradise into heaven, He led captivity captive (comp. Eph. 4:8; also Gal. 5:1; Rev. 1:18).
Word Studies:
67:2 saving health = salvation; 68:4 JAH is an abbreviation of Jehovah — the Eternal, Self-Existent One — and corresponds to I AM THAT I AM; 68:13 pots = sheepfolds; 68:18 led captivity captive = led your captives captive — a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:8-9); 68:20 issues = escapes; 68:35 terrible = awesome, astonishing; 70:3 Aha, aha = an expression of scorn.
