Chapter 36
1 Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his F310 heart; There is no R1049 fear of God before his eyes. 2 For it F311 flatters R1050 him in his own eyes Concerning the discovery of his iniquity and the hatred of it. 3 The words R1051 of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased R1052 to be F312 wise and to do good. 4 He plans R1053 wickedness upon his bed; He sets himself on a path R1054 that is not good; He does R1055 not despise evil.
5 Your lovingkindness, R1056 O LORD, extends F313 to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. 6 Your righteousness R1057 is like the mountains F314 of God; Your judgments R1058 are like a great deep. O LORD, You preserve R1059 man and beast. 7 How precious R1060 is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take R1061 refuge in the shadow of Your wings. 8 They drink R1062 their fill of the abundance F315 of Your house; And You give them to drink of the river R1063 of Your delights. 9 For with You is the fountain R1064 of life; In Your light we see light. 10 O continue Your lovingkindness to those R1065 who know You, And Your righteousness R1066 to the upright in heart. 11 Let not the foot of pride come upon me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away. 12 There the doers of iniquity have fallen; They have been thrust down and cannot R1067 rise.
Chapter 37
1 Do R1068 not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious R1069 toward wrongdoers. 2 For they will wither R1070 quickly like the grass And fade R1071 like the green herb. 3 Trust R1072 in the LORD and do good; Dwell R1073 in the land and cultivate R1074 F316 faithfulness. 4 Delight R1075 yourself in the LORD; And He will give R1076 you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit R1077 your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. 6 He will bring forth your R1078 righteousness as the light And your judgment as R1079 the noonday.
7 Rest F317 in the LORD and wait R1080 patiently F318 for Him; Do R1081 not fret because of him who prospers R1082 in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. 8 Cease from anger and forsake R1083 wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. 9 For evildoers R1084 will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit R1085 the land. 10 Yet a R1086 little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his R1087 place and he will not be there. 11 But the R1088 humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant R1089 prosperity. 12 The wicked plots R1090 against the righteous And gnashes R1091 at him with his teeth. 13 The Lord laughs R1092 at him, For He sees his R1093 day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent R1094 their bow To cast down the afflicted R1095 and the needy, To slay R1096 those who are upright in conduct. 15 Their sword will enter their own heart, And their bows R1097 will be broken. 16 Better R1098 is the little of the righteous Than the abundance of many wicked. 17 For the arms R1099 of the wicked will be broken, But the LORD sustains R1100 the righteous. 18 The LORD knows R1101 the days of the blameless, F319 And their inheritance R1102 will be forever. 19 They will not be ashamed in the time of evil, And in R1103 the days of famine they will have abundance. 20 But the wicked R1104 will perish; And the enemies of the LORD will be like the glory F320 of the pastures, They vanish--like R1105 smoke they vanish away.
21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back, But the righteous is R1106 gracious and gives. 22 For those R1107 blessed by Him will inherit R1108 the land, But those cursed R1109 by Him will be cut off. 23 The R1110 steps of a man are established by the LORD, And He delights R1111 in his way. 24 When he R1112 falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the R1113 LORD is the One who F321 holds his hand. 25 I have been young and now I am old, Yet I R1114 have not seen the righteous forsaken Or his R1115 descendants F322 begging bread. 26 All day long he R1116 is gracious and lends, And his R1117 descendants F323 are a blessing. 27 Depart R1118 from evil and do good, So F324 you will abide forever. R1119 28 For the LORD loves R1120 justice F325 And does R1121 not forsake His godly ones; They are preserved R1122 forever, But the descendants R1123 F326 of the wicked will be cut off. 29 The righteous will inherit R1124 the land And dwell R1125 in it forever. 30 The mouth of the righteous utters R1126 wisdom, And his tongue speaks R1127 justice. 31 The law R1128 of his God is in his heart; His steps R1129 do not slip. 32 The wicked R1130 spies upon the righteous And seeks R1131 to kill him. 33 The LORD will not R1132 leave him in his hand Or let R1133 him be condemned when he is judged.
34 Wait R1134 for the LORD and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked R1135 are cut off, you will see it. 35 I have seen R1136 a wicked, violent man Spreading himself like a luxuriant R1137 tree F327 in its native soil. 36 Then he F328 passed away, and lo, he was R1138 no more; I sought for him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the blameless R1139 F329 man, and behold the upright; R1140 For the man of peace will have a posterity. R1141 F330 38 But transgressors will be altogether destroyed; R1142 The posterity F331 of the wicked will be cut R1143 off. 39 But the salvation R1144 of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in R1145 time of trouble. 40 The R1146 LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers R1147 them from the wicked and saves them, Because they take R1148 refuge in Him.
Chapter 38
1 O LORD, rebuke R1149 me not in Your wrath, And chasten me not in Your burning anger. 2 For Your arrows R1150 have sunk deep into me, And Your R1151 hand has pressed down on me. 3 There is no R1152 soundness in my flesh because R1153 of Your indignation; There is no health in R1154 my bones because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities R1155 are gone over my head; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me. 5 My wounds F332 grow foul and fester Because of my R1156 folly. 6 I am bent over and greatly R1157 bowed down; I go R1158 mourning all day long. 7 For my loins are filled with burning, R1159 And there is no R1160 soundness in my flesh. 8 I am benumbed R1161 and badly F333 crushed; I groan R1162 F334 because of the agitation F335 of my heart. 9 Lord, all my R1163 desire is before F336 You; And my sighing R1164 is not hidden from You. 10 My heart throbs, my R1165 strength fails me; And the light R1166 of my eyes, even that F337 has F338 gone from me. 11 My loved R1167 F339 ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand R1168 afar off.
12 Those who seek R1169 my life lay R1170 snares for me; And those who seek R1171 to injure me have threatened F340 destruction, And they devise R1172 treachery all day long. 13 But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute R1173 man who does not open his mouth. 14 Yes, I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth are no arguments. 15 For I R1174 hope F341 in You, O LORD; You will R1175 answer, O Lord my God. 16 For I said, "May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips, would R1176 magnify themselves against me." 17 For I am ready R1177 to fall, And my R1178 sorrow F342 is continually before me. 18 For I confess R1179 F343 my iniquity; I am full of anxiety R1180 because of my sin. 19 But my enemies R1181 are vigorous and strong, F344 And many are those who hate R1182 me wrongfully. 20 And those who repay R1183 evil for good, They oppose R1184 me, because I follow what is good. 21 Do not forsake me, O LORD; O my God, do R1185 not be far from me! 22 Make haste R1186 to help me, O Lord, my R1187 salvation!
Chapter 39
1 I said, "I will guard R1188 my ways That I may R1189 not sin with my tongue; I will guard my R1190 mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence." 2 I was mute R1191 and F345 silent, I refrained F346 even from good, And my sorrow F347 grew worse. 3 My heart R1192 was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue: 4 "LORD, make me to know my R1193 end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient R1194 I am. 5 "Behold, You have made my R1195 days as handbreadths, And my lifetime R1196 as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at F348 his best is a F349 mere breath. R1197 Selah. F350 6 "Surely every man walks R1198 about as a F351 phantom; Surely they make an uproar R1199 for nothing; He amasses R1200 riches and does not know who will gather them.
7 "And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope R1201 is in You. 8 "Deliver R1202 me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach R1203 of the foolish. 9 "I have become mute, R1204 I do not open my mouth, Because it is You R1205 who have done it. 10 "Remove R1206 Your plague from me; Because of the R1207 opposition of Your hand I am perishing. F352 11 "With reproofs R1208 You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume R1209 as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every R1210 man is a mere breath. Selah. 12 "Hear R1211 my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at R1212 my tears; For I am a R1213 stranger with You, A sojourner R1214 like all my fathers. 13 "Turn R1215 Your gaze away from me, that I may smile F353 again Before I depart and am no more."

Daily Devotional
Highlights:
We are reminded of our sinfulness but then we hear of the perfection of God. Note how those that wait upon the Lord . . . shall inherit the earth (Ps. 37:9). Every day is precious and fleeting; let us be thankful and not waste much of our lives on mere earthly pleasures and material things (39:1-6).
David sat watching a fire burning and recorded: While I was musing the fire burned (Ps. 39:3), its bright flames slowly turned to ashes. He was reminded of how the most satisfying life soon fades and ends in death. This is a reminder to all of us that life will soon end. David then prayed: Lord, make me to know . . . the measure (brevity) of my days (life) (39:4). David realized how easy it is to get so caught up with material achievements that we neglect our most important purpose in life. Opportunities for fulfilling the will of God will soon be no more (39:13). David's prayer points out that the brevity of life is an issue everyone should consider, not just senior citizens. Compared to eternity, earthly life is very, very short. Yet, strangely enough, it is easy to be so involved with daily activities that we do not take seriously that we are just one breath away from death. How could we forget that the breath of life is the gift of God to each one of us. He can and will take it away when it is our time to finish this life.
In our brief journey on earth, we may sometimes retrace our steps or repeat a task; but wasted time can never be recovered. This points out how seriously we need to consider how we can be more effective and to take advantage of every opportunity to wholeheartedly serve Him. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is (Eph. 5:15-17). Only as we read through the Bible will we fully know what God expects of us and how we should serve Him.
Much of our time and energy are devoted to preparations for earthly pleasures. Many make the fatal mistake of waiting too long for a "convenient time" to serve the Lord. But the clock of time will stop all too soon and without notice. Just as the sun is seen rising in the east, it will soon set in the west, and another day brings us that much closer to eternity. For the majority of us, death will come unexpectedly, and much sooner than we think.
It is of utmost importance that we reconsider our secular goals. Do they rob us of opportunities to seek . . . first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness ( Matt. 6:33)?
Thought for Today:
Love your enemies, bless them that curse you . . . and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you (Matt. 5:44).
Christ Revealed:
As the Fountain of Life (and the) Light (Ps. 36:9). In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. . . . That was the True Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world (John 1:4-9; comp. 4:10,14; Rev. 22:1).
