Chapter 29
1 These R882 F464 are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant R883 which He had made with them at Horeb. 2 And F465 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land; 3 the R884 great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders. 4 "Yet to this day the R885 LORD has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear. 5 "I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your R886 clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot. 6 "You R887 have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the LORD your God. 7 "When R888 you reached F466 this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we defeated F467 them; 8 and we took their land and gave R889 it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites. 9 "So R890 keep the words of this covenant to do them, that R891 you may prosper in all that you do.
10 "You stand today, all of you, before the LORD your God: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the R892 one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, 12 that you may enter into the covenant with the LORD your God, and into His oath which the LORD your God is making with you today, 13 in order that He may establish you today as His people and that He R893 may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 14 "Now not with you alone am I making R894 this covenant and this oath, 15 but R895 both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not with us here today 16 (for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17 moreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood, R896 stone, silver, and gold, which they had with them); 18 so R897 that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you a R898 root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood. 19 "It shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will boast, F468 saying, `I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order to F469 destroy the watered land with the dry.' 20 "The LORD shall never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and His R899 jealousy will burn R900 F470 against that man, and every curse which is written in this book will rest F471 on him, and the LORD will blot R901 out his name from under heaven. 21 "Then the LORD will single him out for adversity F472 from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant which R902 are written in this book of the law. 22 "Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and the R903 foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted F473 it, will say, 23 `All its land is brimstone R904 and salt, a R905 burning waste, unsown F474 and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom R906 and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.' 24 "All the nations will say, `Why R907 has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst F475 of anger?' 25 "Then men will say, `Because R908 they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 `They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted F476 to them. 27 `Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to R909 bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and the R910 LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.' 29 "The R911 secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the R912 things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.
Chapter 30
1 "So it shall be when all of these things have come upon you, the R913 blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call F477 them to mind in R914 all nations where the LORD your God has banished you, 2 and you return R915 to the LORD your God and obey F478 Him with R916 all your heart and soul according to all that I command you today, you and your sons, 3 then the LORD your God will restore R917 you F479 from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will R918 gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered R919 you. 4 "If your outcasts are at the ends of the earth, F480 from R920 there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will bring F481 you back. 5 "The R921 LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply R922 you more than your fathers. 6 "Moreover the R923 LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, F482 to R924 love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. 7 "The R925 LORD your God will inflict F483 all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. 8 "And you shall again obey F484 the LORD, and observe all His commandments which I command you today. 9 "Then R926 the LORD your God will prosper F485 you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring F486 of your body F487 and in the offspring F486 of your cattle and in the produce F486 of your ground, for the R927 LORD will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers; 10 if F488 you obey F489 the LORD your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are R928 written in this book of the law, if F488 you turn to the LORD your God with R929 all your heart and soul.
11 "For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out F490 of reach. 12 "It is not in heaven, that F491 you should say, `Who R930 will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' 13 "Nor is it beyond the sea, that F492 you should say, `Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' 14 "But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
15 "See, I R931 have set before you today life and prosperity, F493 and death and adversity; F494 16 in that I command you today to R932 love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may R933 live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. 17 "But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you R934 shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and F495 possess it. 19 "I R935 call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the R936 blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, F496 20 by R937 loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by R938 holding fast to Him; for R939 this F497 is your life and the length of your days, that F498 you may live in the R940 land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."
Chapter 31
1 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them, "I am a R941 hundred and twenty years old today; I R942 am no longer able to come and go, and the LORD has said to me, `You R943 shall not cross this Jordan.' 3 "It R944 is the LORD your God who will cross ahead of you; He will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua R945 is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as the LORD has spoken. 4 "The LORD will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. 5 "The R946 LORD will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6 "Be R947 strong and courageous, do R948 not be afraid or tremble at them, for the R949 LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He R950 will not fail you or forsake you." 7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be R951 strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. 8 "The R952 LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He R953 will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."
9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who R954 carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, "At the end of every seven years, at the time of the R955 year of remission of debts, at the Feast R956 of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to R957 appear before the LORD your God at the R958 place which He will choose, you R959 shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 "Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the F499 alien who is in your town, F500 so that they may hear and learn R960 and fear the LORD your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law. 13 "Their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live on the land which F501 you are about to cross the Jordan to possess." F502
14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, the R961 F503 time for you to die is near; call Joshua, and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, that I may commission him." So R962 Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting. 15 The R963 LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the doorway of the tent. 16 The LORD said to Moses, "Behold, you R964 are about to lie down with your fathers; and this R965 people will arise and play the harlot with the strange gods of the land, into the midst of which they are going, and will R966 forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 "Then R967 My anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I R968 will forsake them and hide R969 My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will come upon them; so that they will say in that day, `Is R970 it not because our God is not among us that these evils have come upon us?' 18 "But I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they will do, for they will turn to other gods. 19 "Now therefore, write R971 this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it on F504 their lips, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 "For R972 when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and are satisfied and become R973 prosperous, F505 then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn Me and break My covenant. 21 "Then it shall come about, when R974 many evils and troubles have come upon them, that this song will testify before them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the lips F506 of their descendants); for I R975 know their intent which they are developing F507 today, before I have brought them into the land which I swore."
22 So R976 Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel. 23 Then R977 He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, "Be R978 strong and courageous, for you shall bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and I R979 will be with you." 24 It came about, when Moses finished writing the words of this law in a book until they were complete, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites who R980 carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, 26 "Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may remain F508 there as a witness against you. 27 "For I know your R981 rebellion and your R982 stubbornness; F509 behold, while I am still alive with you today, you have been rebellious against the LORD; how much more, then, after my death? 28 "Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and call R983 the heavens and the earth to witness against them. 29 "For I know that after my death you will act R984 corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days, for you will do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands." 30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were complete:

Daily Devotional
Highlights:
Moses begins his last words to Israel. He reviews their past, once more clearly emphasizing the blessings of obedience. He pleads with them: Choose life (Deut. 30:19).
Verses for Today:
Keep therefore the words of this Covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do. . . . That He may establish thee to day for a people unto Himself, and that He may be unto thee a God . . . as He hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob (Deut. 29:9,13).
The Creator chose the small Israelite nation through whom He would reveal Himself as the One True God. Moses continued to warn the people of the consequences of disregarding their Covenant responsibilities to the One True God: Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations (29:18).
The chosen people of God confirmed their Covenant with God by promising to keep it. The Covenant was a lifetime to love the Lord thy God, to walk in His ways, and keep His Commandments . . . the Lord thy God shall bless thee. . . . I have set before you life and death . . . therefore choose life (30:16-19).
When the Israelites entered the promised land, they were surrounded by influences that would test their loyalty to the One True God. They were faced with people who seemed to have advantages such as chariots for war and an attractive religious system with images they could see and touch. The Israelites would be tempted to depart from loyalty to God. In one of Joshua's last messages, he proclaimed: When ye . . . have gone and served other gods . . . then shall the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land (Josh. 23:16). Israel's One True God is our God. There is no other. Israel's Messiah is our Savior. There is no other. Christians are also the people of God by a far more precious Covenant (Heb. 8:6) than that of Abraham, and we too are tempted by the many false gods that surround us.
As the nations of the world become our near neighbors, some people are deceived into assuming that the false gods of these nations are the One True God who are called by another name and that their religions are some of the many ways to worship the Almighty God. But all worshipers of these false gods reject that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13).
Thought for Today:
Of His own will begat He us with the Word of truth, that We should be a kind of firstfruit of His creatures (James 1:18).

As life (Deut. 30:15). Jesus is The Resurrection, and The Life (John 11:25).
